Consider/Approve Amendment to Board Policy #5305 – Family and Medical Leave

Background Information:

Recently, the Department of Labor amended its regulations regarding the Family and Medical Leave Act. The new regulations allow an eligible employee to take a maximum of fifteen (15) days, instead of a maximum of five (5) days, of leave with an eligible service member who is on rest and recuperation, and the new regulations expand the eligibility to include veterans of military caregiver leave. These changes are reflected in TSBA’s sample policy on page 2. All other aspects of the Board’s current policy are appropriate, although the wording is slightly different in TSBA’s policy, which is recommended to be adopted in totality.

Staff Recommendation:

Due to the amendment reflecting current federal regulations, I recommend approval of the above-noted amendment to Board Policy #5.305 – Family and Medical Leave, on first and final reading.
